MCRS Methodology
How we assess nanomaterial commercialization readiness
Introduction
The Material Commercialization Readiness Score (MCRS) is a comprehensive assessment framework designed to evaluate the commercial viability and deployment potential of nanomaterials. Unlike simple technology readiness metrics, MCRS incorporates evidence from multiple dimensions: technical maturity, manufacturing scalability, cost competitiveness, market demand, intellectual property landscape, ecosystem support, and innovation trajectory.
The MCRS Final Score: 0–100
The primary MCRS metric is a single score from 0–100 representing overall commercial readiness:
0–20: Pre-Commercial
Concept or early research phase. Limited supplier availability. No clear path to commercialization.
21–40: Emerging
Laboratory or pilot production. Some suppliers. Significant development required before commercial use.
41–60: Developing
Commercial suppliers exist. Proven in limited applications. Costs still higher than incumbent alternatives.
61–80: Advanced
Multiple suppliers. Proven applications. Approaching cost-competitiveness. Strong IP and market interest.
81–100: Market-Ready
Full commercial production. Strong demand. Cost-competitive or premium justification. Established ecosystem.
The 8 MCRS Dimensions
MCRS Final Score is calculated across eight distinct dimensions of assessment:
1Technical Maturity & Performance
Does the material deliver the promised properties? How reproducible are results? What is the data quality and scientific validation?
2Manufacturing Scalability
Can it be manufactured at scale? What production volumes are possible? Are manufacturing processes proven and reliable?
3Cost Competitiveness
What is the cost per unit? How does it compare to incumbent materials? What are the cost reduction trajectories?
4Market Demand & Addressable Market
Is there genuine market demand? What is the addressable market size? What are growth forecasts?
5IP & Regulatory Landscape
What is the patent position? Are there blocking patents? What regulatory approvals are required?
6Ecosystem & Supply Chain Maturity
Is there a supplier network? Are supporting services available? How robust is the supply chain?
7Innovation & Competitive Advantage
What differentiates this from alternatives? Is there sustained innovation? How defensible is the advantage?
8Sustainability & Regulatory Risk
What are environmental and health concerns? Are there emerging regulations? What is the long-term viability?
Evidence Score: 0–500
While the MCRS Final Score is 0–100, the underlying evidence score (0–500) represents the strength and depth of evidence supporting that assessment. This allows users to distinguish between:
- A score of 70 backed by extensive evidence (high confidence)
- A score of 70 backed by limited data (lower confidence)
The Evidence Score combines factors from all 8 dimensions to reflect overall data quality and coverage. Higher evidence scores indicate more robust assessments.
Confidence Grades: A–D
Each MCRS score includes a confidence grade reflecting assessment reliability:
Grade A – High Confidence
Strong evidence from multiple sources. Well-established data. Limited gaps.
Grade B – Good Confidence
Adequate evidence, some gaps. Reasonable assessment but subject to change.
Grade C – Moderate Confidence
Limited data. Relies on some assumptions. Score may shift with new information.
Grade D – Low Confidence
Sparse data. Assessment highly speculative. Use with caution.
Technology Readiness Level (TRL): 1–9
Alongside MCRS, we report Technology Readiness Level (TRL) using the standard 1–9 scale:
- TRL 1–2: Concept / Basic research
- TRL 3–4: Experimental / Lab proof-of-concept
- TRL 5–6: Pilot production / Pre-commercial
- TRL 7–8: Commercial prototype / Early deployment
- TRL 9: Commercial production at scale
